“People remember how you make them feel.”
Corli Pheiffer: Owner – Alchemy Skin & Body, Graaff-Reinet
That simple truth has guided my journey from cruise ships and luxury spas to the wide-open plains of the Karoo. Today, Graaff-Reinet is not just where I lived, it is where my vision found its home.
Owning Alchemy Skin & Body in the heart of the Karoo has been more than a business, it has been a calling. Here, among townsfolk and leading farmers, I discovered that wellness is not bound by geography. Women in the platteland deserve the same standard of care as those in the city, and creating a space where self-care became both accessible and aspirational has been my greatest joy. What began as a leap of faith in 2019 grew into a sanctuary where bright lipstick and best dresses became part of a tradition, a celebration of confidence and beauty in everyday life.
The Karoo tested me, especially during Covid-19, when many businesses closed their doors. I chose resilience. By pivoting to skincare as essential self-care items, relying on social media and the loyalty of my clients, I turned a moment of crisis into record growth. That determination, to play the hand I was dealt as if it were the hand I wanted, became the foundation of my success.
My journey was shaped long before Alchemy, during my studies at Isa Carstens® Academy. At eighteen, I learned grit. Our full days of theory, practicals, and Saturday clinics demanded discipline and resilience. That foundation set Isa graduates apart, our knowledge of anatomy and physiology, our professionalism, and our pride in wearing the Isa name like a coat of arms. It was this training that opened doors to Steiner cruise lines, luxury island spas, and award-winning operations, and ultimately gave me the confidence to build something lasting in the Karoo.
Beyond my own business, I’ve had the privilege of shaping lives far beyond Graaff-Reinet. Partnering with the Rupert-family to develop accredited training programmes has empowered rural women from Botswana, Zambia, and Mozambique to return home with skills that transform their communities. To date, more than sixty women have received the gift of wellness education, a ripple effect of impact that reminds me daily why I do what I do.
From performing treatments on international guests and even celebrities like Drew Barrymore, to guiding young therapists toward excellence, my career has been a tapestry woven with resilience, vision, and faith. Yet the Karoo remains my sweet spot, the place where I learned that true innovation is not about scale, but about heart.
As I look ahead, I am excited to expand Alchemy Skin & Body, merging it with the wedding sector I’ve been closely involved with. But more than growth, my hope is to continue shaping environments where women feel empowered, confident, and radiant. Because at the end of the day, people remember how you make them feel, and that is the real magic.
